EARNEST - Day 4 of filming
This isn't really a day of filming, but we have been made to make major changes to EARNEST. Unfortunately, the audio used for the major dialogue between Jay and Alistair outside City Hall is unusable, due to the poor nature of it, and the prevalence of background noise from the nearby roads and people. It was also too long, and when discussed among the group, it was decided that the music we commissioned a cover of was far too slow and mellow for the romantic comedy nature of EARNEST.
With some expert editing and a little bit of movie magic, we've done our best to turn this horrible situation around in the very short amount of time we have left. Now, two monologues are going to be heard through narration whilst the boys get ready, and the movie will only span as far as Alistair and Jay meeting downtown. We've rewritten the scripts and chosen some new, royalty free, music to use in place of 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart'
The new script will still follow the original shot type list, and highlights the boys motivations;
Jay: ''Hiya, My name's Oscar.'' - Yeah, that sounds good. And no one will have thought of it before, definitely not. Who would actually go catfishing. I mean, I'm being careful, and it's not my fault anyway, I know it's not my dad's either but I shouldn't have to suffer for it. ''Jay don't do that- Jay don't post that.'' Can't tell Ali, he'll be melted if he knows I'm going for his cousin. Are UTV still parked outside? Ah well. It's 2.30, train's late, and I bet Alistair will be late as well. As usual.
Ali: I think I've finally found a way around it, definitely. Catfishing! There's no way that there's anything wrong with this, I mean all I'm doing is trying to talk to a girl. She is really lovely like,... Heh (idk a chuckle or sm) she is WILD - and it's my mum's fault anyway. If I get caught I can just blame it on her, she's the one thats not letting me go out. God I can't wait to tell Jay, wonder if he'll mind me mailing his cousin. Be sweet. I may leave, or I'll be late. Later, I'm already late.
We considered some new music for the opening, and looked at royalty free music websites, because there wasn't enough time to get new music commissioned. In the end, we went with 'Energy' by Bensound. Here's a link to the piece. There was lots of great music on this site, we also considered 'Little idea' and 'Clear day', but 'Energy' seems the right beat and pace for us and our characters.
Here's the uploaded Youtube video of our original EARNEST, that we wouldn't be using.
To get the editing just how we'd like it, we've redone EARNEST several times, each time slightly different. We used Sony Vegas Pro 12 to edit EARNEST because Cliona has experience using it in the past, and she guided us so the whole group could learn. In post production, we turned up the saturation, added the monologues and non-diegetic pop music, and sliced the shots together to avoid long pauses that were prevalent in our preliminary piece. Editing was interesting to try; I have no prior experience with it, and it was a little daunting at first because I'm not that technical, but once we all got started helping out, things went smoothly.
