Left to right: Jane, Conor, Cliona, Jennifer |
On Wednesday 29th of March, Dapper Stork Cinema started filming our short movie, EARNEST. After school, the team and Conor, our actor for the character of Jay, went to Dunmurry train station to get the 3:45 train to Great Victoria Street. From there, we headed to City Hall, where we met up with Aneurin, our actor for Alistair. We choose a bench to the side of the main building, where it was quiet enough to film in peace. We were scared the weather would turn on us at first, but it stayed mercifully dry for the filming period.

Conor got changed into his red shirt on the train, but Aneurin only had to get to City Hall from his school, Inst, so he had enough time to get changed in his school bathrooms. Both actors took our desired colour schemes on board and dressed as they saw accordingly.

Conor and Aneurin |
We filmed a shot on the train of Jay travelling, but other than that, we didn't film much at first. Conor and Aneurin both know each other and have prior acting experience form school and youth clubs, but they still needed a few minutes to look over lines and loosen up. An important part of our film is the relationship between the boys; their friendship has to seem natural, so we were at an advantage using two boys who already knew each other. Conor does Drama A Level, and both he and Aneurin are members of the same drama group, Youth Lyric, which is how I know both of them.

Jane shrugs away her worries and woes |
We had the shot type list on Cliona's phone, which was a good call. Last time, when we filmed our Preliminary, 'Mia Famiglia', we forgot to print out a script, and we didn't have a shot list. It made things a little tense, to say the least. This time, to avoid that, I printed out three copies of the script and we all saved the shot type list onto our phones. We wanted to stick as closely to the storyboard as possible.

Jennifer fulfills her life-long dream of becoming a tripod |
We have a variety of handheld and tripod-assisted shots; sometimes we needed a very close zoom in, or from an exaggerated angle, and we needed to lose the tripod. We stopped every ten minutes or so to let the boys look over their lines and for everyone to take a drink and stretch their legs. Jane and Jennifer alternated between being the Camera Woman, whilst Cliona and I directed shots and helped the boys get into character.
Overall, it was a very successful day - everyone worked well together and we got everything we wanted to do done without having to change any of our plans on set. Next Wednesday we'll be filming the opening shots in my house, and the shot of 'Gemma' for her only appearance.
